Two teams, General Atomics and Maritime Applied Physics Corporation and Aurora Flight Sciences ($BA) and Gibbs & Cox and ReconCraft, will develop designs for the DARPA Liberty Lifter seaplane.
The goal of the Liberty Lifter program is to demonstrate a new level of operational capability by building a long-range, low-cost X-Plane capable of seaborne heavy lift.
The planned demonstrator will be a large flying boat similar in size and capacity to the C-17 transport aircraft and will have the ability to take off and land in rough sea conditions and fly up to 10,000 feet above sea level.
General Atomics has selected a twin-hull, mid-wing design with twelve turboshaft engines for propulsion, while Aurora Flight Sciences has chosen a single-hull, high-wing design with eight turboprops.
During Phase 1, DARPA will refine the designs with attention to operational needs and operating concepts, with the goal of transitioning into Phase 2 in mid-2024 for continued design, manufacturing, and demonstration.
