H.R. 5348 - Social Security Child Protection Act of 2025 Summary
The Social Security Child Protection Act of 2025 seeks to amend the Social Security Act. The main features of the bill include the following:
Reissuance of Social Security Account Numbers
The bill allows for the reissuance of Social Security account numbers to children under the age of 14 in specific situations where their original account number's confidentiality has been compromised. This situation includes instances where a Social Security card has been lost or stolen.
Process for Reissuance
If a parent or guardian can provide evidence, as determined by the Commissioner of Social Security, that the confidentiality of their child's Social Security number has been compromised, they can submit this information under penalty of perjury. Upon receipt of this evidence, the bill allows the Commissioner to issue a new Social Security account number to the child.
Record Keeping
Along with issuing a new Social Security number, the Commissioner is required to keep a note in the child's records regarding the loss or theft of the original Social Security card and the pertinent information related to the incident.
Effective Date
The changes brought about by this bill would take effect 180 days after the date it is enacted into law.
