Cal-Maine Reports $58.6 Million First-Quarter Loss as Sales Fall 41.5%

Cal-Maine Foods (CALM) reported a fiscal first-quarter net loss attributable to the company of $58.6 million, or $1.26 per diluted share, for the 13 weeks ended August 29, 2026. Net sales fell 41.5% year over year to $539.6 million.

The company cited an abundantly supplied egg market and lower conventional shell egg pricing. It said Specialty Shell Eggs and Prepared Foods represented 54.1% of net sales during the quarter.

  • Operating loss was $82.2 million, compared with operating income of $249.2 million a year earlier.
  • Conventional Shell Eggs sales were $201.7 million, with average selling price per dozen down 59.3% and volume down 0.7%.
  • Specialty Shell Eggs sales totaled $236.9 million; Prepared Foods sales were $63.0 million.
  • Cal-Maine repurchased 66,601 shares for $5.0 million during the quarter and had $315.7 million remaining under its authorization.
  • The company said it will not pay a cash dividend for the fiscal first quarter.
