  • Tom Cole was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. He earned his bachelor's degree from Grinnell College in Iowa, his master's degree from Yale University, and his doctorate from the University of Oklahoma. While studying for his doctorate, Cole was a staffer for former U.S. Rep. Marvin Mickey. After graduation, he became chair of the Oklahoma Republican Party in 1985. In 1988, he served as a member of the state senate. Prior to his congressional career, Cole served as a member of the Oklahoma State Senate from 1988 to 1991. He then served as Oklahoma Secretary of State from 1995 to 1999.
