H.R. 9888: Military Installation Readiness and Resilience Act of 2026

This bill would require the Department of Defense to keep regularly collecting information about how extreme weather and gradual environmental changes affect military bases and other installations, including how much those events cost the department. It would also broaden the data collection to cover all types of natural disasters that affect military installations, not just extreme weather and incremental change.

In practical terms, the bill does not directly order the Pentagon to build new facilities or make specific repairs. Instead, it focuses on making sure the Defense Department keeps track of:

• the costs caused by weather-related and natural disaster impacts at military installations, and
• the effects those events have on base operations, readiness, and resilience.

The bill assigns this responsibility to the Secretary of Defense, who would make sure the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment continues this data collection on a regular basis. The goal is to maintain and expand the government’s tracking of climate- and disaster-related risks to military infrastructure.
