H.R. 9416: Ocmulgee Mounds National Park Redesignation Act

This bill would change the name of the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park in Georgia to Ocmulgee Mounds National Park. It would also require federal references to the old name to be treated as references to the new name.

What else the bill would do

• It would direct the National Park Service to manage the park as a unit of the National Park System under the usual federal park rules.
• It would allow fishing in waters within the park, subject to federal and state law.
• The Secretary of the Interior could create no-fishing zones or time periods for safety, administration, wildlife management, or emergencies, after consulting with Georgia.
• It would not change state authority over fish and wildlife management, and it would not affect hunting, fishing, or trapping on private land under existing law.
• It would encourage the National Park Service to increase job opportunities for members of Indian tribes, to the extent allowed by law.
• It would preserve ongoing consultation with Indian tribes and require protection of traditional cultural and religious sites in the park, with access for tribal members with ancestral ties to the Ocmulgee River Corridor.

Tribal agreements and land trust provision

• The Secretary of the Interior could enter into agreements with the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and other interested tribes about managing, conserving, and preserving natural and cultural resources in the park.
• If the Muscogee (Creek) Nation requests it, the Secretary would be required to take into trust about 133.88 acres of land currently owned by the Nation within 180 days.
• That land would become part of the Muscogee Creek Indian Reservation and be managed under federal trust-land rules.
• The trust land could not be used for Class II or Class III gaming under federal Indian gaming law.
