H.R. 9274: Gun Violence Prevention and Public Safety Database Act of 2026

This bill would require the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to create a publicly available online database of gun violence research within one year of the bill becoming law.

What the database would contain

The database would include research related to gun violence in the United States that meets CDC-published criteria. At a minimum, the research would need to:

• be based on original analysis, a systematic review, or other data-driven findings;
• identify the data sources or evidence used;
• explain the methodology well enough for readers to understand how the conclusions were reached;
• be published in a peer-reviewed journal, issued or commissioned by a government agency, or produced by a research organization with an established review or editorial process; and
• include any additional information the CDC director decides should be required.

Transparency requirements

For each item included in the database, the CDC would be required, as much as possible, to identify the organization or person that produced the research and disclose any funding source or sponsorship behind it.

Sources the database must cover

The database would have to include research from several federal public health and injury data systems, including:

• National Vital Statistics System
• National Violent Death Reporting System
• National Electronic Injury Surveillance System–All Injury Program
• National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey
• Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
• Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System

Updates and federal research use

The CDC would have to update the database every six months.

The bill also says that, despite any other law, federal funds available to the Department of Health and Human Services, including the CDC and the National Institutes of Health, may be used to conduct or support research on gun violence.

Funding

The bill authorizes $5 million per year for fiscal years 2026 through 2030 to carry out the law.
