H.R. 9180: CDBG–DR Automated Assessment Act

This bill would require the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to regularly assess what disaster-affected communities still need after a major disaster. Specifically, within 60 days after the President declares a major disaster, and then every three months afterward, HUD would have to use existing federal disaster and housing data to:

• Estimate damage to housing and infrastructure in the disaster area;
• Identify shortages in affordable housing;
• Identify broader economic recovery needs.

HUD would then have to send Congress a report describing that analysis and pointing out any unmet needs in the affected area that could potentially be addressed with Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funds or other related federal disaster assistance programs.

In practical terms, the bill is meant to create an ongoing, automated review process so that Congress and HUD have updated information about what communities still need after disasters, rather than relying on a one-time assessment.
