  • Details about the veteran’s service, such as the branch of the Armed Forces, duration of service, age, marital status, employment status, housing status, gender identity, sexual orientation, race and ethnicity, disability rating, and a confirmation that the veteran’s family members were informed about available support.

• The Secretary is tasked with ensuring that while gathering and reporting this information, the privacy and dignity of the veteran and their family are respected.

Guidance and Resources

• Every notice sent to Congress must include a copy of guidance that aims to:
  • Deter the sensationalism of suicide.
  • Provide information about warning signs that indicate a veteran is at risk of suicide.
  • Inform about available resources for veterans at risk, such as the Veterans Crisis Line and counseling services through Vet Centers.
  • Share best practices for lethal means safety and how to secure lethal means.
