H.R. 10580: Let Americans Buy with Explicit Labeling Act

This bill would change federal labeling rules for fish sold in the United States. It would require labels to clearly show two things together for farm-raised fish and wild fish:

• Country of origin
• Whether the fish is wild-caught or farm-raised

What the bill would require

For covered fish products, the required information would have to be:

• Easy to see and placed in a conspicuous spot where shoppers are likely to notice and understand it under normal shopping conditions;
• At least as large as the text used to describe the fish as wild or farm-raised on the package, display, bin, or holding unit;
• Combined into one label so the country-of-origin information and the wild/farm-raised designation are not listed separately; and
• On the front of the package if the fish is sold in a consumer package.

When it would take effect

The new labeling rules would start one year after the bill is enacted.

Practical effect

In plain terms, the bill is designed to make it easier for shoppers to quickly tell where fish came from and how it was produced when buying packaged fish, and to make that information more noticeable on store shelves.
