We have received text from H.R. 9214: TSP Modernization Act. This bill was received on 2026-06-09, and currently has 21 cosponsors.
Here is a short summary of the bill:
This bill would require the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), which is the retirement savings program for many federal employees and members of the uniformed services, to allow certain transfers of money from a TSP account to a qualified retirement plan to be done electronically.
What changes
- Starting one year after the bill becomes law , if a transfer from a TSP account to a qualified retirement plan at a brokerage firm is already allowed, that transfer would have to be available electronically .
- The person requesting the transfer would need to provide the information needed for the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board to complete it.
Other provisions
- The Executive Director of the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board, working with the Secretary of the Treasury, would have to submit a report to Congress one year after enactment explaining how the new electronic transfer process is being implemented.
- The bill defines Thrift Savings Fund by reference to the existing federal retirement law.
- It defines qualified retirement plan by reference to the Internal Revenue Code.
Practical effect
In plain terms, the bill is intended to make it easier and faster to move eligible retirement money out of the TSP and into another approved retirement plan by allowing the transfer to happen electronically instead of through more manual methods.
